Helsinki – A Stopover During A Cold Snap

Travel days … a one day stop over in Helsinki was a good opportunity to check out the city. Dad picked the hotel this time so of course we stayed in an old prison!
Four of our six person group came down with the flu so this stop over was the perfect chance for them to rest and hopefully recover. Ben and I went into town on the tram to buy a jacket … he had unfortunately lost his while ice fishing! Prices here were cheap, there was a sale and we found a Helly Hansen jacket for 200€. We also needed toothpaste and I don’t know how we did it but we ended up in an organic shop with very expensive fluoride free toothpaste that tastes a bit like flowers.
The next morning before our flight we took a wander around the docks, it was cold and we were underprepared, thinking it was going to be -6 like Google weather predicted. Instead it felt like -20’s with the sea water freezing and breaking up with the currents. Clouds or fog drifted along on the top of the water, weirdly covering and revealing the city.

Today we are off to Iceland … this is a place I have wanted to go for years and I can’t wait to see it.
